Type 1 diabetes occurs most frequently in children and young adults, although it can occur at any age. It is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 5-10% of all diabetes in the United States. Despite active research, type 1 diabetes currently has no cure.
Type 2 diabetes is much more common and accounts for 90-95% of all diabetes in the United States. Type 2 diabetes is an impairment in the way the body uses insulin. This long-term condition results in too much sugar circulating in the bloodstream. Eventually, high blood sugar levels can lead to disorders of the circulatory, nervous, and immune systems.
