Lymphedema
Graham Health System is proud to have a trained Lymphedema Therapist to help you gain control of your lymphedema. Our lymphedema Therapist has Lymphedema certification from Klose Training.
This certification means you will receive the highest quality care available to manage your lymphedema symptoms. Our certified lymphedema therapist is part of our rehabilitation and therapy care team.
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema occurs when the lymph system does not properly remove fluids from your body. Lymphedema is characterized by swelling and fluid accumulation in the head, arm, leg, and/or trunk areas. If left untreated, your lymph system can be damaged.
Lymphedema has a variety of causes, including:
- Trauma
- Radiation Therapy
- Chronic venous problems
- Heredity
Treating Lymphedema at Graham Health System:
Our treatment options help you manage lymphedema and prevent it from worsening so you can get back to the things you love to do. Lymphedema is most effectively managed with a combination of treatments called Complete Decongestive Therapy, an internationally recognized approach. Treatments include:
- Compression sleeves or bandages: A custom-fitted compression sleeve or expertly wrapped bandages may reduce and help prevent additional fluid buildup. If right for you, our lymphedema therapist will guide you through the process of being fitted for a sleeve and provide routine changing of bandages.
- Manual lymphatic drainage: Provided by our therapist, this process stimulates and redirects the lymph flow through a specialized massage.
- Skin care to maintain healthy tissue and prevent infection: Our skilled therapists will provide specialized care, designing a program to meet your needs, whether it is for early management and education or intensive daily treatment.
- Exercise: Movement can help increase the flow of fluids properly. It will also help increase strength and improve range of motion. As a patient, our certified lymphedema therapist will discuss which exercises will help you reach your goals.
